ENGR. FELICIA NNENNA AGUBATA, Ph.D, FNSE
Engr. Dr. Felicia Nnenna AGUBATA was born in Enugwu – Ukwu, Njikoka LGA of
Anambra State. A product of Enugu State University of Science and Technology , she
holds a B. Eng. in Computer Science & Engineering (Second Class Upper Division
1997) and a Master’s degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Distinction) as well
as a doctorate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Communication
Engineering option) .On completion of her National Youth Service Corps assignment at
Innovative Systems Limited in 1999, she started work as a Sales Engineer at Compluleb
Nigeria Limited in 2001.
Engr. Dr. Agubata’s career in the Aviation sector commenced in 2002 upon joining the
Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA (an Air Navigation Service Provider,
ANSP) responsible for managing the Nigerian Airspace through the Provision,
Installation and Maintenance of Navigational Aids, Communication Equipment and
Surveillance Systems), as an Electrical Engineer II and has served in various capacities
including Special Project Officer(SPO) for the rehabilitation of thirteen (13) Control
Towers in Nigeria , Coordinator Project Management Office (CPMO) charged with
the responsibility for managing all the agency’s projects by ensuring that projects are
delivered faster, and within budget. She was in the team that saw to the successful
completion of the celebrated Controller Pilot Data Link (CPDLC) in record time.
Dr. Agubata’s skills and work ethics have earned her three letters of commendation from
two different Managing Directors of the Agency. She was also a recipient of two
Aviation Scholarships in 2007 (Women in Aviation Scholarship by Pratt and Whitney)
and 2010 IAWA/ICAO (International Aviation Women Association/International Civil
Aviation Organization) Scholarship being the only African among the ICAO five in
2010. She was privileged to work as an intern, at Air Navigation Bureau (ANB), ICAO
Headquarters in Montreal Canada in 2010. Agubata is a 2019 and 2022 Royal Academy
of Engineering GCRF African catalyst phase 3 and phase 4 Grant Awardee. She currently
holds the Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel License and Rating (ATSEP) from the
Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority NCAA. She is presently a Deputy General Manager
and Head of Terrestrial Services at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja
Lagos.
A fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Dr. Agubata is the Vice President
Corporate Services of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and Chairman of the NSE
Editorial Board(2022-date). She is the 15th President of Association of Professional
Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), past Council Member of Council for Regulation
of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), former member Technical Board of Directors of
Prototype Engineering Development institute ( PEDI), Ilesha, Osun State, Past Director
IFATSEA (International Federation of Air Traffic Electronics association) African
Region, Member Board of Trustee - Women in Aviation Nigerian Chapter, Associate
member of UK- Based Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Member Association of Women
in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM), Member COREN Engineering Accreditation
Committee(EAC), She is a United Nations Training and Research (UNITAR) Global
Diplomacy (GDI) Fellow class of 2024.
She is a STEM, gender equity and inclusion advocate, a committed change agent so
passionate about girl -child education and women empowerment. She has traversed all
the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria with her “Invent It, Build It” initiative under
APWEN and awarded scholarships to 81 pupils from primary to university levels, as well
as initiated (7) seven science and technology laboratories in seven states primary schools
across the six geo political zones in Nigeria in partnership with NNPC. She is currently
building capacity of STEM teachers across the six geopolitical zones in partnership with
University of West of Scotland through the “SHEENGINEER Invent It, Build It”
programme sponsored by Royal Academy of Engineering UK as the grant awardee. A
recipient of GCRF phase 4 African catalyst awards by the Royal Academy of
Engineering for the SheEngineer 30% club project. She is presently mentoring the
Institution of Engineers Kenya on Engineering Alliance project under the Royal
Academy GCRF African catalyst phase 6.
She is a recipient of many awards including 2020 NSE Distinguished honour award,
2019, 2022 NSE Presidential merit award, 2023 NSE Abuja branch individual honor
award, NSE Maiduguri branch distinguished merit award, 2021 Nigerian Institution of
Water Engineers (NIWE) Distinguished merit award, 2021 University of Nigeria Nsukka
(UNN) Electrical/Electronic Engineering award of Excellence, 2019 NSE Abuja Merit
Award, 2018 CED Magazine Outstanding Professional in the Built Environment, 2019
Excellence Award in Public Service by Njikoka Local Government, Anambra State, 2007
Women in Aviation Special recognition award, 2010 Emerging Leader Award of the
Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), 2012 League of
Airport and Aviation Correspondent (LAAC) Special Woman Trial Blazer Award,
APWEN Reformational Leadership award, 2018 & 2019 APWEN Biennial woman
award, 2021, 2022 and 2023 Aviators Africa Tower Change Maker award (STEM
category). . She was among the top 274 global engineering Icons Celebrated with the
EngineeringIConsTube map by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Transportation
Federation of London (TFL) on November 1st 2023 in celebration of National
Engineering Day. Ryaners Station lane on the London Metropolitan/ Piccadilly Line was
renamed after Felicia Nnenna Agubata. She is 2025 Ascent 100 top career women in
Africa and 2025 National Engineering Role Model nominee. She is happily married with
children.
